Real Behavior Change for Chattanooga Dogs
If you live in Chattanooga and you’ve been searching for a dog trainer who will give you a straight answer instead of a sales pitch, you’re in the right place. Anvil K9 is a veteran owned, NePoPo Gold Certified dog training program based at 4403 Ringgold Road. We work with families across the Chattanooga area: downtown, North Shore, East Ridge, Brainerd, Hixson, Red Bank, Signal Mountain, Ooltewah, and Ringgold. We don’t run group classes. We don’t run private lessons. We run two structured programs and we run them well: a 4 Week Board and Train and a 6 Week Board and Train and Puppy Board and Train, both of which can address obedience, behavior, off leash, and reactivity in the same program.
If you’re ready to talk about your dog, book a free consultation and we’ll give you a real read on what your dog needs and what’s possible.
What We Hear From Chattanooga Dog Owners
The conversations start the same way often enough that we can almost finish the sentences.
The dog was great as a puppy. Now it’s a year old, or two, or three, and the leash walks have fallen apart. The recall is unreliable, especially with squirrels and other dogs. The dog reacts at every passerby on the riverwalk. The dog is great with the family but bolts the door when company comes over. The food on the counter is no longer safe. The cat hides in the back room. They’ve tried a couple of group classes at the pet store. They tried a private lesson. They tried watching YouTube. The behavior keeps coming back, or it gets worse.
Or another version of the same story: the dog is fine in the house but isn’t the dog the family hoped to take to the lake, on hikes at Stringer’s Ridge, into restaurants on the riverwalk, or to the brewery on Saturday afternoon. The dog isn’t there. It can’t handle distractions calmly. It can’t be off leash anywhere outside the yard. The owner is tired of leaving the dog home for everything fun.
Both of those stories are exactly what we built our program to fix.
What Anvil K9 Trains For
Six weeks (or four, depending on the dog and the program) of structured living, daily training sessions, and field work in real environments. By the time your dog comes home, here is what it can do, demonstrated:
A reliable place command. The dog goes to a designated spot and stays there. Through the kids’ homework. Through dinner. Through the doorbell. Through company.
Off leash recall under distractions. The dog comes when called, the first time, with another dog passing, with a squirrel running, with a runner going by. We test in environments that match what your life actually looks like. For more on what off leash reliability requires, see our piece on off leash dog training in Tennessee.
Loose leash walking. No pulling, no zigzagging, no dragging the handler.
Door manners and crate manners. The dog doesn’t bolt the door when an Amazon delivery shows up. The dog rests calmly in the crate without barking or whining.
Real environments. We finish the program with field trips downtown, to Hamilton Place, to Coolidge Park, to the riverwalk, and to local parks so your dog has practiced calm behavior in the same spaces your family actually uses.
For dogs with reactivity or aggression, we add specific work. See aggressive and reactive dog training in Chattanooga for our honest take on those cases and what we will and will not promise.
The Methodology: NePoPo Gold
Anvil K9 is built on the NePoPo Gold framework, a balanced training methodology developed by world champion competitor and trainer Bart Bellon. The Gold tier is the top certification level. Few trainers in the southeastern United States hold the Gold credential.
NePoPo means: build motivation and clarity through reward-based work, then introduce structured corrections through a properly conditioned e-collar so the dog understands not just what we want but what we don’t want. Done correctly, this produces a confident, clear, reliable dog. Done incorrectly, it produces a shut down dog. We do it correctly. The methodology page on NePoPo dog training walks through the system in more depth, and our blog post What Is NePoPo Dog Training is the longer version.
If you’ve heard about e-collars and you’re nervous about the idea, our piece on e-collar obedience training in Chattanooga explains how a modern, low level e-collar works in a balanced framework, why it improves quality of life for the dog rather than diminishing it, and what it is not.
Two Programs, Both Comprehensive
We offer two board and train programs and we run them year round.
The 4 Week Board and Train is built for adult dogs (8 months and up) where the foundation is mostly in place and we’re refining behavior, building reliability, and locking in off leash work. Most of our adult intake fits this program.
The 6 Week Board and Train (which includes our 6 Week Puppy Board and Train for puppies under 6 months) gives us more time for foundational work, socialization, structure, and the deeper kinds of behavior change that take a dog longer to internalize. Reactive cases, anxious cases, aggression cases, and most working breeds end up here.
Both programs include daily training sessions, full board, real environment work, and a documented handoff plan with lifetime support. The differences are time, depth, and how much foundation we get to build before the dog graduates. We will tell you on the consultation call which one fits your dog.
Who This Program Is For
A board and train is a real commitment of money and time. We want the right families and the right dogs. This is a fit if your dog is between 5 months and roughly 8 years old, in reasonable health, and your goals fall into one of these buckets:
You want a dog you can take off leash on the riverwalk, in the yard, at the lake, on the trail. You want to stop the leash reactivity at every passing dog. You want a dog that’s calm with company. You have a working breed (German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, Doberman, Rottweiler, Cane Corso, Cattle Dog) and you’ve realized the dog needs more structure than the average pet program delivers. You’re dealing with reactivity, dog-dog issues, dog-stranger issues, or fear-based behavior. You want a dog that can come everywhere with you instead of staying home for everything fun.
This is not the right move if you want a quick trick fix or you’re not willing to maintain the training after handoff. We send dogs home with a clear plan. The plan works if you run it. If you don’t, the dog drifts. We say so up front so there are no surprises. For a comparison of why we run this format instead of one-hour weekly lessons, read Board and Train vs Private Lessons.
Affirm Financing
The 4 Week and 6 Week Board and Train both qualify for Affirm financing. You can pre-qualify in under a minute on the Board and Train Chattanooga page, see your rate, and choose a monthly term that fits your household. The rate you see is the rate you pay. Most Chattanooga families who choose Affirm pay off the program inside 12 months while their dog is already living the new life.
What Makes Anvil K9 Different
Plenty of trainers operate in the Chattanooga area. The differences that matter are usually the same handful.
Veteran owned. Jake Mumford served, came home, and built Anvil K9 on the same standards he learned in uniform. Direct communication. Programs run on time. We don’t oversell. The longer version of that story is on the About Anvil K9 page.
NePoPo Gold Certified. The Gold tier is the top of the NePoPo certification system. Few trainers in the southeast hold it. The credential is the difference between a trainer using the e-collar correctly inside a clear methodology and a trainer using one because everyone else does.
Two programs only. The 4 Week and 6 Week Board and Train. Every day. Every dog. We don’t rotate from group class to private lesson to daycare to dock diving on the side. The depth and consistency show up in the result.
Honest scope. Some dogs hit elite reliability fast. Some need ongoing maintenance. We tell you which yours likely is on the consultation call, not after the deposit clears.

Common Questions
How much does it cost? Pricing varies by program length and any specific behavioral work needed. We give you a clear number on the consultation call. Affirm financing makes the cost workable as monthly payments.
How do I know if board and train is the right fit? That is exactly what the consultation is for. We ask about your dog, your goals, and your household. If we are not a fit, we will tell you and point you in a better direction.
What if my dog is aggressive or reactive? We work with these cases regularly, but we are honest about which ones we can take. Read the dedicated piece on aggressive and reactive dog training in Chattanooga for our framework on these cases.
How long until I see results? Day one of the handoff your dog can demonstrate the trained skills. Holding the skills over the long term is up to the maintenance plan after handoff.
Will my dog still love me? Yes. Trained dogs are happier dogs. Structure does not damage a dog’s bond with its family. It strengthens it. The full FAQ is on the Anvil K9 FAQ.
