If you’re looking for a trainer who uses proven, science-based techniques to produce reliable, lasting results, you’re in the right place.

What Is NePoPo?

NePoPo stands for Negative, Positive, Positive. It’s a balanced training system developed by world-renowned trainer Bart Bellon that uses a structured combination of three learning phases to help dogs clearly understand what’s expected of them and how to succeed.

The system works by first using a mild negative (such as light leash pressure) to signal the dog that a behavior is expected. When the dog performs the correct behavior, that pressure is removed (the first positive, which is negative reinforcement). Then the dog immediately receives a reward like food, a toy, or praise (the second positive, which is positive reinforcement). This three-step sequence creates extremely clear communication. The dog always knows exactly what’s being asked, how to succeed, and that success pays off.

Why NePoPo Works

NePoPo produces reliable results because it addresses all aspects of learning, not just one. Purely positive methods can struggle to produce reliability under high-distraction conditions. Purely correction-based methods can suppress behavior without building genuine understanding. NePoPo bridges the gap by combining the best of both approaches in a structured, fair, and effective system.

Dogs trained with the NePoPo method tend to be confident, clear-headed, and genuinely happy to work. They understand the rules, they know how to win, and they’re motivated to perform. This is balanced training at its best: structured enough to produce reliability, and motivational enough to produce enthusiasm.

What NePoPo Gold Certification Means

The NePoPo Gold Certificate is one of the highest achievements in the NePoPo training system. It requires demonstrated mastery of the methodology, proven ability to produce high-level results across different dogs and training goals, and evaluation by certified NePoPo instructors. Not every trainer who uses balanced methods has this level of formal training and certification. When you choose a NePoPo Gold certified trainer, you’re choosing someone who has been vetted at the highest level of this system.

NePoPo vs. Other Training Methods

Purely positive or force-free trainers use only rewards and management. This can be effective for basic obedience in low-distraction settings, but may struggle to produce reliable off-leash obedience or address serious behavioral issues like aggression.

Traditional or compulsion-based trainers rely heavily on corrections and pressure. This can produce compliance, but may also create stress, avoidance, or suppressed behavior without true understanding.

NePoPo balanced training uses a structured blend of motivation and clear boundaries. Dogs learn what to do, how to succeed, and that good choices are rewarded. This produces reliable results across all environments while maintaining a motivated, confident dog.

Balanced Training Is Not About Punishment

A common misconception about balanced training is that it’s harsh or punishment-focused. The NePoPo system is the opposite of that. The majority of the training process is built on positive reinforcement and motivation. Corrections, when used, are fair, proportionate, and always paired with clear guidance on the correct behavior. The goal is never to intimidate your dog. It’s to communicate clearly and build understanding.
